2015 - Current
Oriental is often used as a misguided compliment to reduce Asian culture into a word because the complexity is rarely fully understood. There are multiple common false ideas like that they are submissive, quiet and obedient. There is also a mass fetishization of Asian women in society, particularly displaying them as the complete polarities of hyper-sexualization or the symbol of purity. It affirms the historical effect of colonization in Asia.
Asian women are an afterthought in various forms of media. There is a lack in physical representation in media unless it is a performative gesture of pseudo inclusion that still caters to the stereotype. The only remedy for this imagery crisis of under representation is by making photographs accentuating the variety of their existence. This project desires to convey to the world the power through diversity of personalities, appearances, interests and passions in the Asian diaspora. It shows the different variations of Asian femininity that is authentic and simultaneously unapologetic.
Alien children is a conceptual story that explores three species co-existing in an imaginary world. It exhibits the distinct characteristics and celebrates the differences between each species. Every civilization since the beginning of time ideated mythological creatures that roam this dimension alongside our own. Now we exist in a time of space travel, immense technological advancement and information accessibility via the internet. All of these factors intersected and inspired this narrative.

Conjoined will present two women connected by the root (of their hair) interacting with the world and with each other. It acts as an exploration about how we express our multiple selves as a performance in different contexts.
